Diabetes and Gum Disease

Jacksonville FL General DentistWere you aware that during the month of November our nation observes Diabetes Awareness Month? On November 14th the world takes a moment to pause and pay close attention to diabetes by honoring World Diabetes Day. The goal of both of these is to highlight the need for a cure for diabetes. Do you suffer from diabetes? If you do, did you know that 29.1 million other Americans are suffering as well?

At Blue Sky Dental Group, we know that many of our patients suffer in different ways from diabetes. We’d like to take this month as well to highlight the connection between diabetes and your dental health. Sadly, if you have diabetes, you are more likely to develop gum disease (Periodontal Disease).  Patients with diabetes are more likely to lose teeth as well. This is why Dr. Ashbaugh at Blue Sky Dental Group takes great care when treating patients with diabetes.

Just like any infection that you may have, gum disease can trigger your blood sugar to rise and make your diabetes more difficult to control. For this reason, it is important for patients with diabetes to take special care of their teeth. You can do this by maintaining your daily dental habits of brushing at least two times a day. Don’t forget to floss one time per day as well. For children with diabetes, you will need to assist them for optimal effectiveness when flossing. Smoking is harmful to your dental health, but when you have diabetes it puts you at higher risk. Discontinue or don’t begin smoking.

In addition to controlling your blood sugar you should also maintain regular cleanings and checkups with Dr. Jonas Ashbaugh, DDS, FAGD. Call and book your appointment today.
