Composite Fillings

Cavities which occur in your smile viewing area can affect your appearance. Fortunately, composite fillings are a cosmetic dentistry treatment that are available to fill those areas, leaving your beautiful smile intact. Even large cavities can be filled with composite filling material so your tooth looks and feels as natural as an unblemished tooth.

When decay attacks your tooth, it may not be visible in the early stages. After a period of time, the tooth will become discolored and the brown decayed area can be seen clearly. These unsightly spots are cleaned out and composite resin is used to restore the area. When the resin has been trimmed and polished, it blends in with the natural color of the tooth. No one can tell that decay ever touched your tooth. It also feels smooth and slick, just like the natural tooth.

What is a Composite Resin?

Plastic polymer along with ceramic or glass are the main ingredients of composite resins. These materials have been used for decades to fill cavities in anterior teeth. Dental technology and materials have improved and evolved over the years so that the composite resins of today are more durable and have more strength than their predecessors. Composite resins come in a wide variety, each with its particular advantages.

Large fillings generally use the type of resin that is cured with a special blue light. These resins are placed in layers with the light curing each layer to ensure that the filing is properly hardened. A reaction is activated by the light which causes the resin to harden. These are very durable filling materials which can withstand the pressures that are exerted on teeth.

Composite resins are preferred because of their aesthetic appeal. The resins are colored to match the tooth on which they are being used. In this way, the finished result is a tooth restored to look whole and natural.
